Society Meetings

The Cleveland County Genealogical Society holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. The meetings are at 2:00 p.m. on the third Sunday every month, except July and August. Meetings are usually held in the lobby outside the Cleveland County Genealogical Society Library.

We bring food and have a social in September and December. We also bring food for the Society’s Annual Business Meeting in June. The remaining meetings feature a speaker, usually from this community.

Family History Writers Group

The Family History Writers Group meets at 10:00 a.m., second Wednesday every month, at the Cleveland County Genealogical Society Library, in the Community Services Building, 1119 E. Main Street, Norman, Oklahoma.

The Family History Writers Group met for the first time on November 7 2001, a spin-off of an earlier Genealogy Discussion Group. Members have been meeting monthly ever since.

The Family History Writers Group is composed of individuals who enjoy writing, or who want to learn to write about themselves and/or family topics. This is an informal, unconventional approach to writing, and the agenda is essentially the same every month:

  • Attend Writers Group meetings every month, if possible
  • Write something to share with the group every month
  • Read your writing aloud to the group; indicate on your work where you need to edit
  • Listen to others’ writing presentations; make positive comments about others’ work
  • Gather inspiration for your own future writing from the topics presented by others
  • …and the conversation continues over lunch at a local restaurant if your schedule permits

If you’ve ever thought you should write a life history for your children and grandchildren, or that you should write some of the funny stories your parents told—join our Family History Writers Group.

The Cleveland County Genealogical Society often offers workshops, ranging from those for beginners to those for the more advanced researcher.

Workshops will be announced in advance in the Cleveland County Genealogical Society Newsletter , on the CCGS Facebook site, and in local newspapers.

For more information, phone the CCGS Library, 405-701-2100. The library is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Free beginners genealogy workshop being offered

Are you interested in your family history but unsure where to begin? This step-by-step, free, three-hour workshop may be just the help you need to get started.

An “Introduction to Genealogy” workshop is being offered on Friday, October 6th from 1:30–4:30 p.m., at Norman Central Library in Room A/B.

Sponsored by Cleveland County Genealogical Society and the Norman Public Library, the workshop is aimed at those beginning their research, or it can serve as a refresher course for those wanting to recharge their basic research skills.

Topics will cover family research basics such as: how to get started on your family tree, how to interview older family members; where to look for information about family members, and where to find records of births, deaths, marriages, and obituaries.

Forms to help you begin your search — for recording family statistics and for interviewing family members — will be provided.

Space is limited so save your spot by registering at Norman Central Library’s website (, or by calling (405) 701-2600.
