Society Meetings
The Cleveland County Genealogical Society holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. The meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday every month, except January, February, July and August. In person meetings will be held at the Norman Public Library Central, in a room to be announced in the Events page.
For in person meetings, we often bring food and have a social in September and December. We also bring food for the Society’s Annual Business Meeting in June. The remaining meetings feature a speaker, usually from this community.
Family History Writers Group
The Family History Writers Group meets at 10:00 a.m., second Wednesday every month, on Zoom at this time.
Tricia Carleton is setting up the meetings, and sending out invitations which are necessary to join the meeting. Email us if you want to attend at [email protected]. Zoom can be used on Windows or Apple computers, so long as you have a speaker, which will allow you to listen to the discussion and see other participants. A microphone and web cam greatly enhance the experience, by letting you participate in the discussion and be seen by the rest of the group. Zoom can also be used on Android or Apple smart phones; the speaker, microphone, and camera are built into the phone, so you will be able to fully participate.
The Family History Writers Group met for the first time on November 7 2001, a spin-off of an earlier Genealogy Discussion Group. Members have been meeting monthly ever since. The Family History Writers Group is composed of individuals who enjoy writing, or who want to learn to write about themselves and/or family topics. This is an informal, unconventional approach to writing, and the agenda is essentially the same every month:
- Attend Writers Group meetings every month, if possible
- Write something to share with the group every month
- Read your writing aloud to the group; indicate on your work where you need to edit
- Listen to others’ writing presentations; make positive comments about others’ work
- Gather inspiration for your own future writing from the topics presented by others
- …and the conversation continues over lunch at a local restaurant if your schedule permits
If you’ve ever thought you should write a life history for your children and grandchildren, or that you should write some of the funny stories your parents told—join our Family History Writers Group.
Here are some stories written by Writers Group members:
- Nova: The Community Cooker
- Mae: Tornado Hits the Davenports
- Mary: Grandma and the Tea Party
